The best Tx for a rotten head cold is to spend a day OD-ing on vit D out on the slopes IMHO.

friday forte: snow and sinuses
Today I took my fevered and throbbing sinuses to play in the snow.
They enjoyed it, and calmed down.
Now my nose is running like a faucet but my my face doesn't feel like it will burst.
This is a huge improvement.
Play on.

self - portrait thursday : skipped a season
So winter skipped straight to summer for spring break.
I think I spotted my first swallow yesterday.
We ate dinner out on the deck this evening.
I'm still wearing boots.
My ankles don't seasonally adjust very well and it takes ages for me to shed leggings, tights and boots. My top half is ready to embrace the sun but the slightest breeze around my lower legs has me hauling on the long stuff.
Hence very summery floaty silk dress over bamboo leggings and brown leather boots.
Thrifted, of course.

Purple Day - raising awareness for epilepsy
Even though we are in the 21st Century, this disease is still met with fear and ignorance. No, you cannot catch it from someone.
No, it does not mean that the person is subnormal.
Although many living with epilepsy have to make certain adaptations in daily life, I'm sure you would be surprised to find out that most hold down steady, regular and responsible jobs.
You probably don't realise who among your friends has epilepsy because the stigma associated with the condition stops many from talking openly for fear of discrimination or losing employment.
And this often means that families are coping with it in private, often successfully but without a network of support when times get hard.
Purple Day started in Nova Scotia. BC has its own provincial support agency, the BC Epilepsy Association to provide education, support and research to improve the lives of those with epilepsy in the province. If this is the first time you've read about Purple Day, why not had over to their website for more info, and don't forget to donate.
Thank you.

on reflection sunday
Midway thru Spring Break I suppose, and on reflection, I think we're both enjoying it.
Despite the near-total ban on electronics for the Wee Guy. He has been much easier to manage off-Mac than on, and the ipod is now a serious bribe tool.
I'm sad it's come to this as I recognise how much time it takes to do anything creative on the pc, but really - his behaviour at switch-off time has become unpleasant.
So - banned = Mac, ipod, Wii; alternatives = Kobo, books, piano, art materials, camera and so on.
The ban lasts for the whole of Spring Break. Once revoked, there will be strict limits on screen-time.
I'm sure my parents had to implement something similar forty-odd years ago ...

Testing times
This photo was taken in the bowels of the Beaty Museum, where the sun doesn't reach and low light protects the specimens.
With my smartphone and my olympus mu, I experimented with capturing the atmosphere while racing around after the little people.
Adjusting the camera was relatively straightforward - i changed the film speed to 3200 and hoped for steady hands. Changing the sensor to cope with the overhead lights rendered the colours more accurately so I'm quite pleased with the results (check out my flickr stream for more images).
There are fantastic views of perspective along the narrow walkways between the stacks, satisfying my geometric longings and taking me right back to days spent researching through dusty archives. The ISO setting, though a little grainy and with an orange cast, accurately rendered what i was seeing with enough exposure to capture the inhabitants of the preserving jars on display.

self - portrait thursday : being what you read
Apart from spring break parenting I've run AWOL this week, shutting down all volunteer work, college decisions, business stuff, non - domestic tasks and speed of on the world for a while. I've completed the last two assignments for my practicum but otherwise it's just been me, the mr and the Wee Guy.
We've been out on excursions, picked up clothes and a new haircut each, and enjoyed the sunshine. I've painted and read.
This feels new and very decadent. Normally I have something on - the - go at all times. This week, nothing much. Enforced idleness around the parenting moments.
It's hard work but my headspace is increasing and my mind says thank you.
Take a break - take a real break.

Spring Break day 2
hair ... cheesecake ... new books ... new clothes (him) ... lunch ... aquarium ...
Onwards and forever onwards creeps this petty pace ...
with apologies to WS who never had to endure malls, giant book retailers, fashionistas, spring break, social media, rush hour.

midlife monday: done
Done - practicum; certificate; school (until either Fall, or Summer if I sign up for a Creative Writing class); housework (eventually, and after neglecting it almost totally for the past six weeks); writing for work; early mornings; midnight oil burning (unless I want to); volunteering (temporary retiral); commuting.
Instead - Spring Break with the Wee Guy; vacation, absolute (not-nothing-no-nothing-zero at all if I can manage it); domestic maintenance at the minimum.
Intent - blank mind; leisure rediscovery; creativity; reflection; purpose; joy; blank spaces with nothing to do; enforced idleness; reading.

Just one of the amazing places I've been working in for my practicum recently.

midlife monday: ITPA
It's That Pumpkin Again!
- this time in digital oils courtesy of ArtRage.
Need to keep sketching the sucker till it rots (or even while it's rotting?).
So, this weekend - a shift in the giftshop, the boys went skiing, Mother's Day in another part of the world, I over-caught up on hours for my practicum so I'm slightly ahead and have almost run out of work. A good position to be in.
Also this weekend, a maybe or maybe not out of the running for a job application until a friend corrected my reading of the competition status. "At least if you don't get an interview, you won't need to spend time being miserable since you've already done that part," says mr ebb helpfully.
Maybe.

friday forte : traditionally yours
We swam, we saw, we ate ice cream.
Friday.
We've done so much tradition that we could each cash in a loyalty card.
One of us had gummy bears in his scoop.
All of us had fun and full tummies.
Tradition.

self portrait thursday: March 7th 2013
would it be the same for the 2D or 3D creativity if that's what I was doing for reals day in, day out?
Or is it because I'm still finding my way in this text journey back into paid employment? I've never written for a living although writing has been a part of previous wage earning. Just not such a big part.
I like this and I don't like it. I like the obligation to write and the lack of choice in subject matter. I love the challenge. I hate the not writing. I miss my writing, unstructured though it is.
Does any of this make sense?
Answers on the back of a postcard ... Usual competition rules apply.
