harmony, on top of the world
Pre-festive times with my boys, enjoying some outdoors and getting-away-from-it-all before we do similar at home. Christmas might be for families, but when you're a threesome it tends to stay fairly quiet anyway. We'll do the family stuff at home on the day then try to get out and about later that week. Christmas is for unwinding, recharging and finishing leftovers.

8Dec13: family hike
Today the sun shone and the thermometer dropped. Not as much as it is with other friends, online and IRL, across Canada, but still chilly for round here.
We went for a hike to savour the outdoors, as every day without rain in Lower Mainland winter is a bonus.
The streams and puddles were frozen (much ice smashing); the fungi on the trees looked creepy (much photography); we walked briskly to keep warm (much chatter).
But mainly, no whingeing.
A first in a long time.
So maybe we just looked like a family out for a hike, rather than full scale war on six legs.
We talked.
We talked about moving house. A dog. Pets past, present and future. Christmas. Skiing. Snowboarding. Minecraft. Sarcasm ... as if you'd understand.
A brisk hike. Nothing more.
Nothing less :)

friday forte: illuminated
When i went bat-shit-crazy and resigned the month before last, in sure there were among you dear readers those wondering why. Why, after all the whining about not having a job, about being unemployable, being unrecognised for my awesome mad skills? And you and i both know who you are, don't we? Yes, there will be days when i do question my decision. Yes, i am anxious about leaving security and a regular cheque. Even though it was for only five months. Freelancing is a bit of an unknown entity. Scarey. But so far, I have no regrets. This week I hit my weekly income target without too much difficulty. I sleep better at night. Life is a slower pace. I've painted my studio and almost completely moved back in. My new oil paints are waiting. I'm content.

SPT 5Dec13: out and about snow thrift
Spent this morning whooping it up on the (limited but glorious) snow on Cypress Mountain. Carved a few carves, tried some fast stuff, went backwards and didn't fall over as much as mr ebb. A good day. Wardrobe notes: Columbia jacket and pants (thrift); neck warmer (vintage turtle fur); goggles, vintage; Burton boots and Freedom 51 board, almost vintage; long thermal underwear (be thank =ful you can't see it) circa 1983, M&S.

Someone once accused me of emigrating for the glamour of it all. Although i think a different kind of glamour was meant, I'm certainly enchanted by what I've found here. Snow, awesome views, the great outdoors ... it's hard not to be seduced by it all. Yes - I came for the glamour.

terrific tuesday: time well spent
Digital doodle fun with a Bamboo Splash pad yesterday evening. Used the Autodesk Sketchbook program that came with the drawing tablet and tried out the brushes. Makes a changes from doodling on my android tablet and it feels odd not drawing directly on the screen. I use the Autodesk apps on my android, so I sort of know my way around the tools. As you can see though, I still have much to learn. But I'm happy to keep practising. It's quite a luxury to have the time/space to do so. And this is something I want to keep in mind after this year's busy schedule.

Sunday moments
Sunday - out with the boys on the first snowfalls on Cypress. stretching it a bit to call the mountain open for skiing but we did manage four good runs. On the last one, i was chased down the slopes by a go faster wee guy. his ski boots are almost the same size as mine. When did this happen? The first of many family weekends on snow? I hope so. Exercise is much more fun together and skidding on snow.

Cypress Mountain is open, so guess where I'll be?
