A final hammocking ... now packed away. #i2f This hammock was my safety net and refuge during stressful times. I'd head off there to unwind in the evening, knit a bit and shout at the fat pigeons. After a decent pause, my dad would come find me, bringing chocolates as an excuse, and chat about his day. He didn't open up that much usually but he did share some of himself on this visit. Happy memories.

saturated

Saturated.
I saw this recently describing the feeling of Dealing With Everything. Saturated.
It's a better descriptor than overwhelmed IMO; overwhelmed implies knocked sideways, buried, engulfed, flattened, non-functioning while actively resisting.
Saturated however, suggests a stealthy process of being filled up, at peak absorption, but like a sponge trying to soak up even more.
This is the end of week one. A week that has seen a blocked toilet, hospital, driving on the wrong side of the road, solo parenting, grey skies and rain, humidity, jetlag, teen boredom and brief meltdown, cancer, around 300 miles of driving, 8,000km air travel, screen time, confusion, tiredness, frustration, a broken laptop charging pin...but not vacation though we're far from home.
To escape saturation, I've turned into a raccoon mum once more -- sabotaging sleep by creating headspace in the hours before sleep. Knit, sketch, paint, draw...carving out alone time that isn't simply sleep.
As usual, it's not my story to tell (it rarely is) but as usual I am saturated by it all.

Fun, informative, entertaining, inspiring and coincidental; excellent afternoon with SFU Science for talks by Dava Sobel and Joe Schwarcz on Science fiction and fact. Great #scicomm event. So why coincidental? Well, I read Sobel's book, Longitude while writing up my PhD thesis and it made me realise that writing Science could be fun. And right now, I'm writing up a blog post on meat glue, using an article by Schwarcz as one of my resources. Congrats to the two speakers on their honorary degrees - well deserved!

Forgot to post this one; at last! Finished this monumental pile of lace fluff. It's a knitted shawl, longer than I'm tall, using the thinnest lace weight merino yarn I've ever handled. A totally tedious but very simple repeat lace pattern that bored me stupid... but so worth it in the end. #knittersofinstagram

Could have ended really badly since I generally lose my balance in total darkness... But our server was wonderful and didn't let me fall over! Food delicious. Highly recommended. An amazing experience.

Visited The Anvil Centre in New Westminster for the first time, to attend an excellent seminar on the state of local journalism this morning. Thanks to panelists and audience for a stimulating debate.
