monday's sunday scribbles
my boys, just hanging out together :) |
Sometimes Sunday just comes and goes without registering ... well, of course it didn't. It was full of family stuff as usual, with an inspiring trip to Evergreen's Emerging Talent gallery reception and film festival (more info here) thrown in for good measure.
I had two pieces published on Accelerating Proteomics and one in the new Inside Biobanking blog.
- Epitheliod Sarcoma Proteome Reveals Molecular Alterations, where researchers compared normal surrounding tissue with tumor to see what differs. By doing this, scientists can get a lot of information on what is altered in cancer cells, thereby gaining useful ideas for developing treatments.
- Multi-parameter Spectral Scoring Improves Peptide Identification in Shotgun Proteomics - this was a software review, written about algorithms, data analysis and whatnot for proteomics, the study of proteins. I understood it when I wrote it, is all I can say. Each paper I read on proteomics pushes my knowledge of this fascinating subject along a little further - it's interesting to note that, had I stayed in research, my work would probably be heading along these methodologies.
- Biobanks and Donors: How to Understand What is Understood looks at the process by which informed consent is established for donors supplying biomaterials for onward research. It's a big subject and a fascinating one, so it was interesting to find out how much goes into designing consent forms these days.
In addition, I spent an enjoyable Friday morning interviewing Fred Soofi at his newly refurbished restaurant, Pasta Polo for a business review to publish in February.
As another project, I've also been working on marketing copy and thinking up ideas for presenting a portfolio as a way for a business to network to new clients.
and I was the subject of this post, beautifully written by Roma to announce my employment with Talk Science To Me (wahoo!).

sunday scribbles ... and on into the new year
moving at light speed ... |
Apparently, after Epiphany it's very non-you to wish a happy new year ...
This week's scribbles are science writing through and through.
- A Bone to Pick: the Proteomics of Zebra Fish Skeletal Development - all about validating the suitability of zebra fish for studying bone development in vertebrates per se.
- Examining the Phosphatase Interactome with Affinity Proteomics - complicated protein-protein interactions with a very pretty illustration to bend your neurons.
There has been a lot of writing and social media-ing behind the scenes (not that social media is behind the scenes at all), so I haven't just been slumped behind my desk for the past two weeks. It has however, been a bit frustrating waiting for review paper pitches to be accepted - the approval process is a bit, er sluggish - so I have been feeling a leetle thwarted as this is where a big chunk of my income comes in from.
It will pick up and then I will be feeling a lot less thwarted and a lot more frantic. C'est la vie.

sunday scribbles into new year
the next work-in-progress awaiting me, as in it's not in progress currently |
A couple of posts this week to brag about; one, a nifty technique for proteomics sample prep - "On-bead Digestion for Interactome Profiling — Breast and Kidney Cancer", and the other a local business review for The V3H - "Saint St. Grill: Your Post-Christmas Treat".
And a Call for Artists for the Blackberry Artist's Society - "Port Moody Artist Co-op: Call for Members 2015"
And that is all (that has been published)!

midlife monday; the employment issue
and there was much rejoicing |
dear reader
i stand before you, ...
you're sitting
dear reader
i sit before you, ...
you're sitting in front of the keyboard
dear reader
in the interests of full disclosure, i'm sitting on my spreading arse in front of a keyboard bashing out these words for you to read ...
that's better
... and now the moment is lost - the gravitas of the situation has fled
aww poor you - can't have been that good then?
dear reader
for the first time in over 13 years, i am an employed woman ...
is that it then?
yes
*runs off to strangle critical inner voice*

sunday scribbles - delayed posting
festive lights at Lafarge Lake |
Publishing went a little quiet in the festive season - I did upload a couple of posts to complete my month's assignments, but then I just relaxed (amid all the removals boxes ...).
- A Cross-linking MS Workflow to Characterize Cell Penetrating Peptide Interactions - or when is inert not inert?
- Extracellular Matrix Proteomics and Tumor Metastasis - a 'what lies beneath' expose of wandering tumor cells
- On-bead Digestion for Interactome Profiling - Breast and Kidney Cancer - a really neat technique for preparing a sample for proteomic analysis and pulling down only the proteins you're interested in
... and that is all! Happy reading :)

dancing on the stars
Day after and into a new year. It's been a strange festive period - much christmassy stuff punctuated by unpacking boxes. Not a lot of going out, a lot of getting the house ready for work and schools and so on. I'm hoping we'll be back on track in 2015, after the dishwasher repair, the bathroom reno and the floors project!
So no set in stone resolutions for me - just a vague intention to get fit and cycle more and improve the work/life balance thing; to strive onwards and upwards with parenting my Wee Guy, to improve my #scicomms skills and develop new ones; to paint, to create, to write, to live more.
It's difficult to set out intentions without seeming selfish, but in the last year of my forties, I'm more aware than ever before that it's me that predominantly takes care of me. And that by taking more care of me, I am stronger to take care of my family.
Without letting my family hold me back, I need to go forward so that I can pull them along too.
An oxymoronic start to a new year? Probably but that's life!
